Brarykat’s Weblog

Just another WordPress.com weblog

Step #14 Technorati

I just talked about Technorati in a presentation on Blogs for our staff in-service day!!! My collegue Paul and I shared the purpose of blogs and blogs that staff have created for the library. We discussed several different options to add to blogs depending on the purpose and audience. We even had time to chat about wikis in one of the three sessions!

Step #13 Tagging

I am so excited about LibraryThing, Shelfari, and GoodReads!  I am using LibraryThing in my Teen Summer Reading Program blog and Shelfari for the Children’s Summer Reading Program blog.  I have added books from the SRP manual bibliographies.  I chose GoodReads to showcase books from the Bettendorf Public Library collection in my “Tummy Time” blog!  I was not so sure about GoodReads at first, but am very happy with this tool now!  Each week I insert a new shelf with books from our story time themes appropriate for babies and toddlers.  I have also included Parent Shelf  resources on certain topics.

I am going to clean up my Children’s and Teen SRP blogs this week.  My plan is to add shelves for specific chapters in the manual to these blogs.  I hope this will make it easier for librarians to browse through the books.  I am also planning to add a shelf to both SRP blogs for book titles that were not included in the bibliography, but ones that pertain to this summer program theme!  I think this will really help!

Step #12

Just getting back to 23 Things… WHERE has the time gone?  I have my Rollyo account – just need to embed it ASAP!

WaHOO!

This is my scorpion tattoo from a bug program during Summer Reading 2008!  An artist painted different bug tats for children and teens in less than 5 minutes!

Honey Do…

Brarykat Trading Card

Brarykat Trading Card

Okay!  Tomorrows “Honey Do List” is to get the blogroll, trading card, and flickr picture onto my blog.  I also need to add to my Library Thing.  Running out of time to get this done tonight, unless I can get my trading card done right now!  Let’s try!

Forgot to mention…

I forgot to mention that I added a poll onto my blog!  I am new to ALL of this – every step has been a treat for me!  So if you have 2 seconds… answer my “How Many Books Do You Read In A Month?” poll!  Thanks!

Step #11

Step #11 is to take a look at Library Thing and catalog some favorite books.  STARTED!  I’ve been itching to get to this step!  I have a few titles in “My Library” already, but will need to spend more time on this step!!!  Most of my top picks are from the young adult collection.  I read Children’s and Young Adult material… so many good titles in both collections!

Step #10

Learning 2.0 Step #10 is to play around with an online image generator.  I got lost in the joys of generators, too!  No hope for me with all this technology!  I have a list of image generator sites for the Young Adult Librarians during my presentations!  Hopefully they will find them useful next summer or willing to share with their teens!  I’m going to share a poem from the “Gibberish” site!  Should go well with Klingon Speak, reading Geek Code, and Spoonerisms!

Step #9 Useful Blogs & News Feeds

Learning 2.0 Step #9 is locate a few useful library related blogs and/or news feeds.  Like I said in Step #8 I feel like I’m learning so much that I’m losing myself in gathering information!  I need to keep track of my time better, but I’ve located great additions for my teen presentations and feeds for me professionally.  More later!

Step #8 RSS

Learning 2.0 Step #8 is learn about RSS feeds and setup my own Bloglines newsreader account.  I have completed this step.  I learned about so many different feeds I found myself falling behind “my schedule”.  So many interesting things out there – it’s hard not to get lost in all the information!  I see how beneficial RSS feeds could be for librarians by saving time locating facts!
