Step # 23 Summary

This is definitely “Just the Beginning” for me!!!  This assignment allowed me to create the Children’s and Teen Summer Reading Program 2009 blogs.  Then I jumped into my Tummy Time blog since I develop programs for families with babies and toddlers.  I nearly fell out of my chair when I was adding new posts, websites, and books onto GoodReads today to the Tummy Time blog.  I started the blog just a few weeks ago and I already have over 800 hits on the counter!!!  WOW!!!

My library is having a staff in-service day December 11, 2008.  I was asked to give multiple presentations for all staff members on BLOGS!!!  I am thrilled to share the information I have learned and the tools I enjoy with my colleagues!  A co-worker and I will be presenting together which will give a well-rounded view of  blogging!

I am going to continue with the 43 Things You Might Want To Do This Year. I want to keep learning about technology for myself and to be a better guide at my library! I have already been to: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FWE/is_2_10/ai_n16133338
So I’ll bring in the New Year with bells, whistles, and technology!

Step #22 Audiobooks

I used to work at a public library in Northern Iowa that provided audiobooks for patrons to download through NEIBORS (North Eastern Iowa Bridge to Online Resource Sharing). The public libraries in the Quad Cities Area offer electronic resources through Wilbur. Wilbur has more titles to choose from and a wider variety of genres. This is a great tool for some patrons, but personally I would rather have the CD or playaway version!

One of my co-workers recently bought a Kindle. He shared this technology with all of us in our department. I like the size of print option! Looks like we have another book format that is here to stay!

Step #21 Podcasts

I have included a reading from National Public Radio on my Teen Summer Reading Program blog. One of the chapters in the manual included This I Believe as a program idea. The Bettendorf Public Library did a program last year called “One Book – One Bettendorf”. Citizens of Bettendorf were invited come to the library for a free copy of This I Believe and then pass the book to another person. The hope was that a majority of our community would be exposed to this book during the program. We offered book clubs, essay writing sessions, and essays printed in the local paper. Chris Little is an employee at my library and her essay was picked up by NPR. I have invited my Teen SRP blog readers to listen to Chris’s own words as she reads her core belief essay. I thought this was a wonderful format!

Step #20 YouTube

I have included several YouTube videos in my work related blogs.  I wanted to encourage librarians to promote programs through videos.  I embedded two very different YouTube videos to show how great this form of promotion can be No Matter what budget allows!  The Franklin Avenue Library Teen Advisory Board created their video to promote Teen Read Week.  The other program promotion video is from the Round Rock Public Library in Round Rock, Texas.  Two different ways to draw get the word out about their libraries!

I was just looking at YouTube videos for Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. I have to decide which video to add to my Tummy Time blog because of my recent Bedtime theme. I really like the videos that have a room model from the book! I think the families that are visiting my Tummy Time blog will enjoy this children’s favorite!

My LIS 635 instructor mentioned the best seller Dewey the Library Cat in a recent lecture. Vicki Myron was my instructor for Public Library Management II. Vicki was working with her publishers during my class! I bet she is very pleased with the success of her book and Meryl Streep being named as the star of the movie!

Step #19 Web 2.0 Tools

I need WAY more time to explore this!I gained insight from each article. I thought that “Away from the icebergs” author Rick Anderson would agree with our class post discussions about Al Vara’s Virtual Reference!

I am still trying to absorb what Dr. Wendy Schultz wrote in “To a Temporary Place in Time”. Wow, reading about Library 4.0! I even chatted with members of our library staff about her article. I need more time to think about how all of this will be affecting us, so I am very glad Schultz included her thoughts on our future!

Step #18 Web-based Apps

I loved Google Docs!  The forms and spreadsheets are great! I wonder about the future of Microsoft with these free downloadables. I am sure that they have think tanks working around the clock to keep their companies viable.

Step #17 SandBox Wiki

So many things to look at in this catagory! I spent far too much time on the Children’s Book Reviews! I read books throughout the spectrum of Babies to Young Adult. I will be adding this wiki to my blogroll!
http://childrensbookreviews.pbwiki.com/

Step #16 Community Wiki Search

Okay, then.  That did not take as long as I expected!  I went to this weeks lecture and clicked on “Wikis as Legitimate Research Sources” by Suzanne Bell at http://ezproxy.library.wisc.edu/login?url+http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=tfh&AN=35157397&site=ehost-live

Then I scrolled down to http://Wikispot.org where I clicked on the Wiki Directory.   I was shocked that there is not one community from the state of Iowa or Minnesota included in this directory.  I used to live in San Antonio, Texas so I clicked on the state of Texas.  There I found only Friendswood and Houston have created wikis!  WOW!  Shocking!  I bet this will change dramatically as more people learn about wikis.

Step #16 wikis

I enjoyed Step #16!  I spent far too much time in the Book Lovers Wiki developed by the Princeton Public Library!  I browsed through The index to the Reviews.  I found the 5 Star Reviews helpful because I read primarily juvenile and young adult literature.  I was ecstatic that Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card was included in the Science Fiction reviews and 5 Stars to boot!

I also hit several community wikis.  I thought it was interesting that Chicago and Seattle wikis have not been as popular as the Omaha Wiki!  I am going to do a search to see if there is a community wiki for any of the towns I have lived in throughout my life time!  More SOON!

Step #15 Library 2.0

This week I completed my Library 3.0 class assignment.  So, it was very interesting to read these thoughts about Library 2.0 tonight.  Dr. Wendy Schultz went as far as defining Library 4.0 in her article!  I like her comment that “Library 4.0 will not replace Library 1.0 through 3.0 but absorb them.”  My brain was in overload just contemplating Library 3.0!
